Pop music’s best-selling duo of all time, Daryl Hall and John Oates, just wrapped a special limited three-night run at the Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Next month, they begin their 2019 tour in earnest, starting in Europe and hen visiting South America for the first time in their career before coming back to the states for a late summer/early autumn run. The shows in Vegas featured many of the sweet, soulful hits that fans no doubt come in expecting, from the opener “Maneater” through “Out of Touch,” “She’s Gone” and “Family Man” among others, capped with a sparkling grand-slam encore of “Rich Girl,” “Kiss On My List,” “Private Eyes” and “You Make My Dreams.” But they also dig into deeper parts of the catalog, and “It’s a Laugh,” “Las Vegas Turnaround” and in particular the expansive, jazzy “Is It a Star” from 1974’s War Babies album provided solid evidence that amongst the many hits, each Daryl Hall and John Oates album is worth a deep dive for these lesser-known gems. The tight, sturdy band, as always, provided the perfect musical framework for the two stars to stretch and shine and the appreciative crowd loved every minute of it. Many countries are in for a treat this year.
